What are the types and characteristics of powder coatings?

2023-10-12

Powder coating is one of the coating types that has developed rapidly in recent years, with an annual growth rate of about 10%. The reason is that driven by national environmental protection requirements and technological innovation, powder coatings have sufficient growth momentum. However, most consumers only know about water-based paints (the most common ones are latex paints), art paints, oil-based paints, etc., and do not know much about powder coatings. So here we will explain to you the types and characteristics of powder coatings:

1. Functional powder coating

Functional powder coatings refer to surface coating materials that have special functions and provide special uses. It not only plays a traditional protective and decorative role, but also gives the material various special functions. The coating of this type of coating can be a highly wear-resistant and scratch-resistant coating with a fine structure and a matte color. It is a coating with rough surface structure but good masking performance for uneven defects on the substrate surface. The technical level of functional powder coatings in my country still lags far behind foreign advanced levels, and it is also one of the directions for the domestic coatings industry to tackle in the future.

2. Low temperature curing powder coating

Since the curing conditions of powder coatings are relatively harsh, they generally need to be baked at 180°C-200°C for 10-15 minutes. The baking temperature is higher, the time is longer, and the efficiency is lower. The baking temperature of low-temperature curing powder coatings is Around 150℃. Lowering the curing temperature of powder coatings can not only speed up the production speed of automatic production lines and improve production efficiency, but also enable powder coatings to be applied to heat-sensitive substrates such as composite materials, wood, and plastics. Therefore, the realization of low-temperature curing can effectively save energy, improve work efficiency, and expand application areas.

3. Heavy anti-corrosion powder coating

This type of powder coating, even if the powder coating we mentioned above is used in specific needs, this type of powder coating is mainly anti-corrosion. It also has excellent mechanical properties and anti-corrosion properties of acid, alkali, solvent and heat resistance. , mainly used in oil pipelines, ships, construction steel bars, storage tanks, etc.

4. Thin coating powder coating

Coating film thickness is an important factor in determining the appearance of powder coatings. At present, my country's standard film thickness for powder coatings is 60-80 μm, but for products that only require a coating thickness of 30-40 μm, thick coatings make the product excessive in performance and increase the production costs of coating manufacturers. Therefore, the development of thin-coated powder coatings is one of the future developments of our powder coatings.

5. Imitation electroplating effect powder

High imitation electroplating products have extremely high requirements for powder production and use. A little negligence will cause paint film defects. At present, defects in bonding technology, metal powder, and powder appearance make the imitation electroplating effect powder still have a certain distance from actual electroplating products. However, due to the increasingly stringent national environmental protection, environmentally friendly technology products will have a broader market space.

6. Water-based powder coating

The powder coating is dispersed in water, then additives are added, and filtered to form a suspended liquid. These additives have little impact on the performance of the final coating. At the same time, this type of coating is in the form of powder before use, so it is better than water-based coatings in terms of storage and transportation.

The above six points are the current types and characteristics of powder coatings. In the future, with the improvement of construction technology, the characteristics of powder coatings such as high performance, high environmental protection, and high utilization rate will be generally accepted by people. By then, they will be used in the construction and decoration industry and Other areas shine.
